1) Can it be fixed to a wall (I am not sure the base we have will take the fixings) 2) Is there any cushioning so that a box of wine, for example, can be safely added?

Yes it can be fix to a wall, It comes with a fixing get. The unit comes wrapped in an "air wrap" systems, We suggest the top cover of the unit is placed in the base to allow soft landing of heavy goods.
