Washington ditch plastic cups in the canteen

Our Washington facility, UK, has taken a leap and removed all plastic cups from their canteen.

Over the last few months, the cups were removed from water machines and employees were encouraged to use their own reusable water bottles. Following a positive response to this change, they then decided to remove cups from the hot drinks machine as well, asking colleagues to use mugs or thermoses from home instead.

Shaun Jukes is Penn Elcom Washington’s H&S and Human Resources Manager and was in charge of executing the initiative. Speaking about the motivation for the changes, he explained “Plastic in our oceans has been a global concern for quite some time now, and on-the-go items such as straws, cups and stirrers make up over 20% of all litter.”

Shaun and others at Washington felt that the use of plastic cups in the canteen was unnecessary. “There is no need to have plastic cups in the canteen as people can use their own bottle and re-use it instead of taking a plastic cup each time they want a drink.”

CA installed environmentally friendly LED

Our California depot has reviewed its lighting solutions to consume less electricity.

Skylights have been installed throughout to make the most of the California sunshine. All lights in the warehouse and bathrooms have also been replaced with environmentally-friendly LED, using less power to illuminate for longer. They have also been equipped with motion sensors to save on unnecessary electricity usage.
