We put a lot of love into manufacturing our products at Penn Elcom, so naturally we very much enjoy seeing the end result from customers who use them. This month, we’re shining the light on a very unique creation by Sylvester Vogelenzang de Jong called Box of Doom!

You might be forgiven for wondering if it’s safe to read on but worry not, because this box is in fact a guitar and bass isolation cabinet for musicians. Sylvester had the idea back in 2008 when as a guitarist, he wanted to record at home without disturbing his neighbours. He built a box which prevented as much sound from escaping as possible and realised he also needed to transport safely it to shows.

From there, he built it into a flight case and began developing it, improving its performance as well as ease of transportation. Other bands began to notice his ingenious box and request one for themselves, so in 2009 his company was born.

Sylvester needed quality flight case components and explained:

“From day one I worked with Penn Elcom. I knew that Box of Doom needed to be very high quality and it had to look great, so we have been using the highest and heaviest quality.”

To make the best model he could, Sylvester used Penn’s flight case components, dishes and connectors. Still, he knew there was room for improvement so he got in touch with Dénis Hoogesteger and together they discussed how Penn could develop a unique custom D-sub dish to provide connections on the exterior of the case to the components inside. Dénis knew Penn could manufacture the perfect dish and the Box of Doom was complete.

In Flames’ Paddi Krause told us:

“I've first used Box of Doom cabinets in 2013 with In Flames, and later with Arch Enemy and Opeth, and immediately could tell this was an immense upgrade to our sound quality. Now, six years and hundreds of shows later, we still use the exact same boxes. On large scale productions and constant touring with an A and B rig leapfrogging around the globe, there is not much time to spend worrying about gear and to handle it super careful. Box of Doom products are made for heavy duty usage and deliver top notch audio quality at the same time. Well done.”

That is resounding praise for Box of Doom and Gojira’s Joe Duplantier also had this to say:

“We used the Box Of Doom on our entire Magma world tour. Both the build and sound quality are next level. The best option if you want to use real amps on stage and in the studio! Amazing product. “

Box of Doom will be an official partner at Europe’s biggest guitar show - Mannheim’s Guitar Summit in September!
